Coyne soon began to notice the kid in the parrot suit and sang a David Bowie cover directly to her at the show in Calgary, with Nell singing every word back.Ī musical bond formed with Coyne staying in contact with Nell and her father Jude as she learned to play guitar, while their creative relationship began to flourish when she started to write her own songs. Nell had already attended several Lips shows and was a regular at the front of the stage, dressed in a parrot costume and screaming out the band’s songs. This inspiring and heartwarming story begin when Smith, originally from Leeds (UK), moved to Canada and first met Wayne Coyne at the age of 12 at The Flaming Lips’ headline show at the Sled Island Festival, Calgary, in 2018 with her family. The album was mastered by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios. I’m a fan.Where the Viaduct Looms comprises nine Nick Cave cover versions with vocals and instrumentation by 14-year-old Nell Smith and instrumentation and production by The Flaming Lips. Nell shows a remarkable understanding of the song, a sense of dispassion that is both beautiful and chilling. “I always found it difficult to step away from this particular song and sing it with its necessary remove, just got so twisted up in the words, I guess. Alerted to the cover by a fan, Nick Cave took to his website The Red Hand Files to write: “This version of Girl in Amber is just lovely, I was going to say Nell Smith inhabits the song, but that’s wrong, rather she vacates the song, in a way that I could never do,” said Cave. In a pleasing addition to the tale, the great man himself has given his seal of approval to the collaboration. It was cool to listen and learn about Nick Cave and pick the songs we wanted to record.” I hadn’t heard of Nick Cave but Wayne suggested that we should start with an album of his cover versions, and then look at recording some of my own songs later. It was a really steep learning curve but Wayne was so encouraging when I was struggling with a few of the songs that I kept going. Nell comments: “I still can’t really believe it. It was a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude to making music.” With Nell, we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. Speaking about the collaboration, Coyne comments: “It’s always great to meet excited, young creative people. The first track they recorded was a cover of Girl In Amber, the video of which Nell shared late last year. Coyne chose Cave because Nell didn’t know him and wouldn’t have preconceived notions as to how to sing the songs. When a planned trip to record with the band in Oklahoma had to be cancelled due to covid, Coyne suggested Nell record some Nick Cave songs and email them to Oklahoma to be backed by the band. Their creative relationship began to flourish when she started to write her own songs. A musical bond formed, with Coyne staying in contact with Nell and her father Jude as she learned to play guitar. Needless to say, the faithful of Shelyn find this an abhorrent and terrifying concept. 8 She has an odd view of Shelyn, whom Lamashtu would love to capture and twist into her own monstrous vision of beauty. She is aware of Desna's hatred of her due to the murder of Curchanus, but treats her as beneath notice. Despite this widespread animosity, she focuses her attentions on growing her cults and expanding their reach, as well as the birthing of new and hideous monstrosities. Lamashtu, in a stance befitting her demonic origins, considers all other gods her enemies. 8 She is often depicted surrounded by countless adherents, with a single individual rising above the rest. Her head may vary depending on the nature of her worshipers: gnolls preferring the jackal head, medusas a snake's, harpies a hawk's, and so on. The blades may grow and shrink from the size of a falchion to that of a kukri. She is often depicted carrying her two deadly blades, Redlust and Chillheart: the former is of fire, the latter of ice. Pictures of Lamashtu portray her as a jackal-headed woman, with a third vertical eye in the center of her forehead, heavily pregnant, with feathered wings (like a raven's), a snake's tail, and taloned feet like a vulture's). Lamashtu's realm is Kurnugia, the largest layer of the Abyss. It is claimed by many monstrous humanoid races that she was their first progenitor and creator. 6 Once she coupled that knowledge with the use of her own body to gestate the demons, she birthed the vavakia, a true masterpiece of the art of creating demons. From torturing Roshmolem, Lamashtu learned the "art" of creating demons. When she learnt that demons were the result of experimentation by a Horseman of the Apocalypse, Lamashtu invaded Abaddon and killed the Horsemen Drulaema and Roshmolem. Lamashtu's vendetta against him is only equaled by Desna's own vendetta against her. He wounded her terribly, but her new-found divinity allowed her to survive they have been dire enemies ever since. Pazuzu was enraged by this shift in power, and as Lamashtu returned from that battle he betrayed and attacked her. This imbued the demoness with a small amount of his divine power. By defeating him, she ripped his godly domain over beasts from him, beginning an ancient vendetta with Curchanus' protégée, Desna. What is known for certain is that she lured the god Curchanus into her territory and beset him with swarms of demons and other monsters until he was weak enough for her to attack. In ages past, she was the lover of Pazuzu. Lamashtu was once a mighty demon lord who became the first such entity to achieve true godhood. It also connects to your bank, credit card, credit union and other financial institutions so that it can automatically download transactions.Įmpower was previously known as Personal Capital which has long been the best personal finance app for Mac users but Empower acquired it in August 2020. Once you’ve traced all your paths you’ll have an option to Make Work Path (as it’s called in Photoshop) which closes off each selection. With each program offering a slightly different approach to doing this, it’s worth spending some time playing around with the different options to get the result you want. These paths can be used to trace your image and can be tweaked in many ways. In Photoshop and similar software, you have an option called paths. This process can vary between different software. Once you’re satisfied with your adjustments, it’s time to separate the logo from the background of your image. Use the brush and eraser tools to clear up any stray lines or to darken any spaces. Brightness and exposure can also help increase contrast. Start by converting the image to black and white, then increase the contrast to really make the logo pop. The process is the same no matter which program you use.īefore you learn how to turn your drawing into a vector, there are a few tweaks to make first. Photoshop is the most common photo editor, but there are many free alternatives. Now that you have a digital copy of your logo, you can bring open it up in your editing software. However, things such as lighting and page creases can have a negative effect on your logo, so it’s not recommended except as a last resort. If you don’t have access to a scanner, a picture with a digital camera will work. Aim for a resolution of 600 dpi (dots per inch.) If you can at too low a resolution, you’re limited with what you can do. Even if the setting is higher than you may need, it’s better to have the option to scale down if needed. Set it for the highest resolution that you can. The best way to get your logo from the page to the screen is with a scanner. Thick black markers are great for filling in spaces and rulers will help keep the edges sharp. This will make the conversion process much easier if you put in the effort now. You want the logo to stick out from the rest of the page as much as possible. Step One: Finalize Your Drawingīefore digitizing your logo, make sure that it’s as finished as you can get it. So, how do you convert a hand-drawn logo to a vector image? At this point, it’s not even a raster image, but a physical property. It allows you to resize the same logo to meet whatever your display needs are, whether it’s for a business card, corporate banner, or webpage logo. While this process isn’t as effective at handling all the information that something like a camera picture contains, it’s perfect for simpler objects like logos. That means the same image can be made any size and still present the same. These paths stay the same shape no matter what size they’re made. Trying to turn a small raster image into a large one will result in a blurry, unusable picture.Ī vector image, on the other hand, is defined by paths. The drawback is that changing the size of the pixels changes the clarity of the image. They can accurately display complex images at defined sizes. Raster images work really well for complex images. For example, in a picture of a skyline, the pixels making up the sky are blue, the pixels making up the sun are yellow, and so on. That means that they are defined by pixels, each containing a piece of information about the overall picture. Digital pictures are known as raster images. You’d still need to crop out the surrounding area, but you’d have an otherwise serviceable digital image, right? The simplest way to turn a drawing into a digital image would be to take a picture of it. Keep reading to learn how to turn a drawing into a logo. Instead, it’s simply about having a guide to take you through the process. While it is a multi-step process, there’s nothing about it that requires computer skills beyond what most people can manage. Luckily, digitizing that image isn’t impossible. The only problem then is turning that logo into an image that can actually be used online and for marketing purposes. They appreciate having that control when creating a representation of their brand. Are you wondering how to turn a hand-drawn sketch into a digital logo, but don’t know where to start? With all the options for creating graphics with a computer, many people are still more comfortable drawing their logo ideas physically. What’s the magic formula? I can’t tell you, but I’m looking at profit and loss statements every day trying to help these restaurants,” Hemenway said. “People go into it for passion, and you end up in the school of hard knocks. Soaring rents can range from $2 to $2.25 per square foot in addition to costs for maintenance and taxes, often referred to as “triple net.” Just opening a restaurant usually costs at least $150,000, and profit margins are typically slim. “It’s a very hard time to be in the restaurant business,” she said. Natural disasters like fires and floods notwithstanding, restaurants already face significant hurdles just to stay open in high-cost parts of Sonoma County, according to former chef Lisa Hemenway, who now works in commercial real estate. “We have to come up with a really substantial amount of money to reopen,” said Stewart. Village Bakery, an anchor tenant, has signaled it hopes to reopen by early summer.įriends and family of the Zazu owners set up crowdfunding sites that have brought in an estimated $70,000 so far, but the couple says that’s well below what it would cost to open the doors again. Barrio owner Carlos Rosas and Village Bakery owner Patrick Lum said Barlow management have been responsive and financially helpful. Cofield Cheese and several retail businesses. Their exit comes in the midst of several Barlow reopenings in the past two weeks, including Barrio Cocina Fresca and Community Market, along with Wm. Zazu was swamped with 22 inches of water contaminated with gasoline and farm-runoff, requiring extensive cleanup, especially for food purveyors. Nearly half of the roughly three dozen businesses in the chic shopping area were affected by floodwaters, with a handful declared a total loss. He said other restaurateurs have already shown interest in the Zazu location. They’ve worked super hard and we’ve been glad to have them, but if they’ve officially decided to move on … there’s not much that I can do.” “I want to be supportive of John and Duskie. I’ve been rebuilding their restaurant,” said Aldridge. He said the rent-due notice sent to Stewart and Estes was in response to a letter from the couple’s attorney stating that they were not reopening.Ĭalls to the couple’s attorney were not returned Thursday. He said he remained committed to Zazu’s reopening, having hired workers to put up drywall and sanitize equipment. Zazu had several years left on its long-term lease, and its departure is the most significant exit yet of a flood-affected business at The Barlow.Īldridge said he was shocked to see trucks pulling up to the restaurant Thursday morning and removing equipment. I mean if there’s no way to get to the bathroom, you’re not opening,” said Stewart. As one of the earliest occupants of The Barlow, Zazu’s rent was among the lowest, Aldridge said.īut with no income to cover rent, the couple couldn’t see how to move forward. His monthly bill including base rent, maintenance fees and taxes amounted to $8,000 per month, according to Aldridge. “We were really caught off guard,” Stewart said. Much of the restaurant equipment had already been moved off site while remodeling was taking place, but Stewart said the final straw was a rent-due notice emailed on Wednesday afternoon by Barlow management. Stewart said the exit stems from a communication breakdown with Barlow owner Barney Aldridge about the restaurant’s future after floodwaters in February caused an estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, leading to weeks of closure and layoffs for 35 staff members. Throughout the day, friends in the restaurant business brought flatbeds, trucks and brawn as the couple hastily packed up their equipment, sending everything to a shipping container at their home in Forestville. Though reconstruction had progressed on the 3,600-square-foot restaurant, Stewart said that for now they are no longer occupying the building. On Thursday, Zazu owners John Stewart and Duskie Estes began moving out what was left of their kitchen equipment - large pizza ovens, refrigerators and ranges - from the acclaimed Sebastopol location they've occupied for nearly six years. Zazu Kitchen & Farm, one of Sonoma County’s high-profile restaurants, has left The Barlow two months after a major flood overwhelmed much of the upscale Sebastopol business district, dealing a crippling blow to shops and eateries that are struggling to reopen. |
